Disco Balls and Dance Fever
I rolled my shoulders and prepared to step off the train. After much discussion, our band decided that the last stop was an aberration. Someone must have been playing an elaborate joke and we just got caught up in it. After all, who in their right mind sews felt poodles onto their skirts?!
I headed down the steps onto the platform and came to a dead stop. Instead of the train station I’d been expecting, there was a large room with a lit floor made of glass squares and a rotating, mirror-like ball hanging from the ceiling. A group of people, men wearing ridiculously wide-bottomed pants and women in slinky dresses with wide belts, was cheering on a dancing couple.
At least, I think they were dancing. It looked more like acrobatics to me with an indecent amount of touching. I winced as the man in a brilliantly white suit with large lapels performed the splits. The noise was incredible and it wasn’t from the people gathered around. What kind of music was that? I cupped my hands over my ears to dampen the sound but I still felt it through the soles of my shoes.
“I don’t think this is our stop,” yelled Eleanor from behind me. I twisted my neck around and found the rest of the fellows behind me, all gaping at the spectacle.
“Definitely not.” I pushed everyone back up the steps. “Get back on the train. We’ve got to find our stop soon in Chicago or we’ll miss the show.”
No one argued and found their seats quickly. Hopefully, we’d make it in time!
