Waiting for God by Xochitl Dixon is a 31-day devotional to walk through the times when you wait for God. We never know why God waits to answer prayer, to reveal His plan, or to teach us something. We must lean on Him regardless of circumstance and hardship. And this book strikes right to the heart of the matter. Waiting can be hard. Yet in each chapter and through various testimonies, Xochitl demonstrates that our only response to God’s timing is to trust in Him, lean on Him, and rely on His steadfastness.
MY THOUGHTS
Reviewing a devotional is an odd choice for me as I don’t usually study the bible through devotionals. I much prefer to delve headlong into God’s word and pick it apart, syllable by syllable. If you’ve ever attended a bible study with me, you know this already! But when Xochitl’s book became available for review, I couldn’t resist. I wanted to know how she stays so faithful and faith-filled despite her chronic condition.
And, through the thirty-one chapters, I discovered she’s a lot like me. She has chronic pain, as do I, and she has gone through medical test, procedures, and medications, as have I. We’re both married with children (all boys). She also admits that there have been times when she hasn’t leaned hard on God, trusted Him with her whole being, and let circumstances cause her to doubt, worry. And, in that, we’re also the same.
Through her testimony, and that of others in the book, I found hope. After all, Xochitl used the circumstances to find her way to God. There were times when she needed to learn something, to trust a little more, to reach out to others. The general message throughout the book was to lean on God and trust in His perfect timing. Life can be rough, but our joy is not in our circumstances. It’s in Jesus alone.
Waiting for God is a lovely book filled with hope and a much-needed reminder that God is sovereign in all things. There will be times spent on “Meantime Mountains” or trudging through valleys of despair. But God is good and He is faithful. We can rely on Him and trust in Him thoroughly in all things.
Goodreads rating: ★★★☆☆ (liked it!)

MORE FROM XOCHITL
“Never pray for patience.”
My friend’s warning pricked at the back of my mind. Without realizing it, I began lacing my prayers with fear, doubt, and caution. I couldn’t risk being thrust into situations that would force me to develop patience, so I did everything in my power to avoid asking the Lord to help me be patient.
But even when I didn’t ask Him to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in me, I always seemed to end up in circumstances that stretched my faith as much as my patience.
When my agent challenged me to write the book I had to write, I pitched Waiting for God: Trusting Daily in God’s Plan and Pace.
I thought I’d be sharing tips about how to persevere through trials and endure suffering with grace. But after I signed the contract and received a deadline for my manuscript, my husband received an unexpected job offer.
We followed the Lord from California to Wisconsin.
Writing became a challenge as I suffered a setback in my healing journey. I endured high levels of pain and fatigue. My husband and I struggled with frustration as we adjusted to life in the Midwest during one of the coldest winters in history.
And God changed my perspective on waiting for Him, which has nothing to do with patience.
I’ll be sharing my answers to the end-of-chapter questions on my blog (www.xedixon.com). I’m excited to invite you to join the adventure.
I look forward to growing with you as we wait for God, inhaling His Word, exhaling in prayer, and resting in His love as we trust daily in His plan and pace.

My mother in law faithfully sends me (and many others in the family) a devotional thought each morning after her Bible study time. It’s such a sweet way to show that she’s praying for me!
What a wonderful way to share God’s love to one another!
Wonderful review! Thank you for being part of the tour.
Suffering seems to bring out the best insights to God’s heart of love. I’m looking forward to hearing more about this new book!
Thanks for that beautiful perspective, Sally. I was inspired by every person I had the privilege of interviewing as I wrote Waiting for God. The Lord used every person to reveal Himself to me in a deeper way, to reveal the expansiveness of His love in ways I never expected. To God be the glory!
This book sounds like a really great read.
It was wonderful to read. Thanks for stopping by!
This sounds good! I don’t normally use devotionals, either, but this sounds worthwhile.
It definitely is!

April, I am so grateful for your kind words of encouragement. Knowing that you suffer from chronic pain breaks my heart, Sister. But knowing the blessed you with hope while reading Waiting for God makes me grateful, so grateful for His ongoing faithfulness, and brave . . . even when I’m weary and getting a bit tired of persevering. I thank God for you and for the privilege of connecting with you and your readers through the comment section. I’m praying for you and the ministry the Lord has entrusted to you, Sister. To God be the glory!
